Challenge
Develop a compelling game experience based on a beloved childhood toy to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the Mini Cooper line of automobiles.
Exploration
This app was BMW/Mini's first foray into the mobile space. We were provided an existing marketing campaign for inspiration, as Mini had already created a child's water-toy giveaway for distribution at their global dealerships. Our initial approach was to digitize the experience and heavily integrate with the iPhone accelerometer to provide an ultra-realistic simulation of the toy.
Solution
Constructed as an entirely native app, the game features a truly custom experience: eight photorealistic levels, each with detailed illustrations, custom soundscapes, ambient effects, and a game engine centering on a fluid dynamics engine that we designed and built in-house. Since its launch in 2009, the game has had over 600,000 downloads in the iOS App Store, and we've been commissioned to create five foreign-language versions for localization purposes.
